So many of us push creativity to the bottom of the priority list, not realising just how much of a vital role it plays in our mental wellbeing. Creativity shouldn't be seen as a luxury but as a simple way to help you switch off and have some freedom in your thinking. That's something we nurture in our jewellery workshops, encouraging students to unleash their inner artist and remove any creative blocks. We love to help our students to have courage in their creativity through jewellery making.
So much of life is about following the rules and being steered in directions that you aren't always in control of but the one thing about creativity is that you are free to explore and there are no rules! Ok, we have health and safety considerations but when it comes to design and creation, we love to explore the various ways of making jewellery. Our weekly students have the freedom to explore, using wax carving techniques, delft clay casting, silver clay, gemstone setting and even enamelling to name a few. This allows them to find a medium that suits them, rather than trying to force them into a technique that doesn't set their soul on fire.
Our studio space in Clitheroe, Lancashire is the ideal environment to try new things and to explore. Our tutors are there to encourage and support our students on their creative journey and we believe in the joy of the learning, meaning that we don't force perfection, we are more interested in the process and how it feels for the individual. By taking this approach, we see our students grow in confidence and they then start thinking like jewellery designers.
The beauty of creativity is that everyone can benefit from it and everyone has the ability to use it. We have lots of people join our one day jewellery workshops who start by saying "I am not creative at all." Nine times out of ten, these people have the best results. Why is that? To contradict the last statement, you can achieve great results when making rings, bangles etc by following a process. This means that those who are less comfortable with their creativity can still find the joy in jewellery making. They're also often the people who find it most relaxing too.
Whatever your level of creativity, we can guarantee one thing, you will love making jewellery, it's simply a question of whether you love it so much you want to do it again or whether you love it so much you need to do it again!
